The third round is hardest, with the remaining 2 teams making 1,000 cupcakes in only 2 hours. Each team is assisted with the help of a 5-person team consisting of one carpenter and four bakers to create the showcase for the cupcakes and help make the cupcakes for their corresponding contestants.

The show invites cupcake bakers and pastry chefs from all over the United States to compete in the 3 rounds.

Each episode has a theme. The themes that have been mentioned so far have been based on a golf tournament, a Seaworld birthday party for an orca, a “match-making” aphrodisiac party, an Ace of Cakes 100th episode celebration, “Survival of the Fittest” theme, an autistic charity event and at a film festival.

Well hello there all my fellow cupcake lovers! How many of you out there have heard of the new show on the Food Network’s new show Cupcake Wars? Well if you havent you should check it out. It premieres tonight at 10PM on the Food Network! I have invested extra interest in this show because one of the local bakeries here on Cape Cod will be on the show soon! Cupcake Charlie’s was founded by a husband and wife team right here on the Cape in Mashpee Massachusetts.

It’s cupcake vs. cupcake in Food Network’s tastiest competition yet! Each week on Cupcake Wars, four of the country’s top cupcake bakers face off in three elimination challenges until only one decorator remains. The sweet prize: ,000 and the opportunity to showcase their cupcakes at the winning gig.

Last season, LA-based Vegan Chef Chloe Coscarelli was one of eight grand prize winners. A major upset to the competition in episode three, she proved that vegans can bake a sweet cupcake too. Her Chocolate Strawberry Shortcake seduced the judges in the “Match Making Party” episode.

In season two, Allison Lubert and Heather Esposito will elevate the novelty a little higher. In a field of conventional bakers, Lubert and Esposito consider more than the aesthetic. Their cupcakes are not just vegan but allergen-free, meaning no gluten, dairy, eggs, soy, corn, peanuts, or refined sugar. Tonight’s episode is “Hard Rock,” with cupcakes being made for Hard Rock Cafe’s Pinktober concert event.

Last week, I stopped in and, while waiting for Nelson to arrive, tucked into a carrot cupcake (below, right) that, I must say, was moist and yummy (carrot cake is my favorite, so I’m pretty fussy about the cake part). This was an ordinary Wednesday in July, in the middle of the afternoon, and the line was pretty long when I got there and even longer when I left (and no, it wasn’t all women). So the question is, what the heck is it about cupcakes? Now, I’m no confection novice, having spent time behind the scenes of TLC’s “Ultimate Cake Off,” interviewed the host, George Duran, and judges, and then decorated a cake of my own with the Cake Divas of Culver City, Calif.

Also, during a visit to New York City in April, I sampled the oversized wares of the Crumbs Bake Shop (below, left) in the open air of Bryant Park in Manhattan (where Sprinkles will soon open a bakery). But it wasn’t until I did the research for “Cupcake Wars” that I realized the extent of the cupcake craze. I knew about Sprinkles, of course, having tasted them on set at the allegedly last episode of “Scrubs” (it was the last NBC episode, that much was true) and then at a “Flipping Out” birthday party (pictured at bottom). But it’s now certain that the cupcake-TV trend, like the cupcake-eating trend, is on the upswing. Tonight, Friday, July 16, TLC debuts “DC Cupcakes,” a new series about business partners and sisters Sophie LaMontagne and Katherine Kallinis (below, right) of Georgetown Cupcake, a small bakery that has become a thriving business.

“Sometimes we’re thinking, ‘Hmmmm,’” she says. “But we’re doing what we love to do, and we’re very fortunate to be able to make a living doing it. There are no complaints.” Asked about the appeal of the diminutive confections, Nelson says, “My favorite thing is the universal appeal of the cupcake, and the fact that everyone can participate in it. They’re very democratic in that way. “Who hasn’t had one? Who doesn’t have an opinion? Even the anti-cupcake sentiment — great, so you hate a cupcake. “Everyone’s talking about it, because everyone can. I can get in a cab and have a very intelligent conversation about what I do.

Unique Cupcake Ideas For Your Next Birthday Party

Cupcakes can be more than just a sumptuous treat at your next birthday party or bridal shower. This much-loved dessert can also be a main attraction of the party.  Try these tips to take your birthday cupcakes to a show-stopping next level.

Cupcakes Big and Small

Did you know you can make other sizes apart from your standard cup-sized cupcake?  Now cupcake molds are available in bite-sized up to giant versions that will double as a full, shareable cake.  It’s not much extra work to pour your cupcake batter into several different-sized molds. The visual effect of a giant cupcake centerpiece surrounded by rows of gradually smaller cupcakes is both mouth-watering and photogenic. Have fun with it!

Table Decor

A multi-tiered plate full of beautifully decorated cupcakes makes an attention-grabbing centerpiece for a table or buffet.  They can also be part of seating arrangements by setting a food-friendly placecard stand in the cupcake in front of each place setting.

Just try to keep the guests away until dessert!

New Ideas For Frosting and Garnishing

Think about decorating ideas you’ve seen for big cakes and make them small. For example, each cupcake can have a photographic transfer image on the frosting, similar to what you may have seen in sheetcakes. Select a variety of funny images of the birthday celebrant to decorate the cupcakes.

Also consider a wider variety of frosting garnishes such as gumballs, lollipops, m&m’s, munchkins, pretzels or popcorn to top each cupcake. These add unique flavors and can be inspired by the birthday girl or boy’s favorite foods. For another unique presentation, place the cupcake frosted on the top and sides in a small ice cream cone.  Voila, a cupcake cone!  Or, place one letter on each cupcake so that when you present them on a tray, they are arranged to spell “Happy Birthday.”

Remember to color coordinate cupcakes with your other decorations for a stunning display.  Also be sure to have a supply of festive party bags or boxes for your guests to take a cupcake home as a party favor.  Use these tips to make cupcakes a memorable part of your special day.
